Starkville, Miss. – Saint Xavier University senior catcher Ashley Hunter (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) was named a first team honoree in the Great Lakes Region when the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) recently announced its 2012 NAIA All-Region Teams. This season, 134 student-athletes representing 46 NAIA institutions were chosen for either first or second team recognition in each of the NFCA's five regions. In addition to Hunter, senior pitcher Amie Brown (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) and sophomore pitcher Megan Nonnemacher (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) were both at-large representatives on the Great Lakes Region Second Team.
Hunter had an impressive senior season with the Cougars leading the team with 69 hits, six home runs, 97 total bases and 43 RBI. She started in all 53 of Saint Xavier's games of the 2012 campaign and hit an amazing .404 (69-for-171) on the year. Brown tied a national record this spring by throwing two perfect games on the year. She had an earned run average (ERA) of 1.84, a win-loss record of 16-5 and racked up 133 strikeouts. Nonnemacher led the Cougar staff this spring with a 1.54 ERA and 169 strikeouts. She posted a record of 18-8 on the year and held opposing hitters to a .198 batting average.
Saint Xavier finished up its 2012 campaign earlier this month with a 37-16 overall record and a No. 24 ranking in the final NAIA Softball Coaches' Top 25 Poll. The Cougars finished second in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) regular season standings with a 14-4 mark as well as second place in the CCAC Tournament behind only No. 9 Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.).
