CHICAGO – Behind the solid pitching efforts of senior right-hander Amie Brown (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic), senior righty Nicole Derezinski (St. John, Ind./Andrean) and sophomore right-hander Megan Nonnemacher (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community), the Saint Xavier University softball team took a pair of non-conference games from Cornerstone University (Mich.) Friday afternoon at SXU Softball Field in Chicago.  The Cougars (35-14 overall) held on for a 3-1 victory in the opening game and then captured a 5-2 win in the nightcap.  Brown threw all seven innings of the first game and allowed just four hits, one run (earned) and two walks with nine strikeouts to move to 15-4 overall this season.  Derezinski threw the first three innings of game two and gave up four hits, a run (earned) and no walks with one strikeout, while Nonnemacher got the victory (17-7) in relief going the final four frames and allowing two hits, a run (earned) and no walks with four strikeouts.

The Cougars took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of game one off a RBI groundout by senior catcher Ashley Hunter (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) and a RBI single by junior third baseman Kate Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew).  Mollohan posted another RBI single in the third inning to give SXU a 3-0 advantage.  A solo homer to left field by Cornerstone to open the sixth inning capped the game's scoring as Brown put them down in order in the top of the seventh.  Mollohan went 2-for-3 with the two RBI, while sophomore first baseman Ariel Hinton (Crawfordsville, Ind./Crawfordsville) also went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored.

The Golden Eagles opened the late game with another solo homer to take an early 1-0 lead, but the Cougars quickly answered tying the game, 1-1, on a RBI single to left field by Hinton in the bottom of the frame.  Two errors and a wild pitch helped Saint Xavier plate three more runs in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead for good.  Cornerstone got its third home run of the day, another solo shot, in the top of the sixth to make the score, 4-2, but a RBI single by freshman centerfielder Shannon Lauret (Beach Park, Ill./Zion-Benton) in the bottom of the sixth wrapped up the scoring.  In addition to Lauret, SXU got two hits from freshman third baseman Sarah Saunders (Burbank, Ill./Reavis) and freshman designated hitter Alexandra Bahner (Rochester Hills, Ill./Adams) in the late game.

Saint Xavier (35-14 overall/14-4 CCAC) wraps up its regular season slate with a non-conference doubleheader against Bethel College (Ind.) on Saturday, April 28.  The first game of the twin bill is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
