CHICAGO – Junior catcher Tony O'Shea (Valparaiso, Ind./Mount Carmel) and sophomore first baseman Thomas Keating (Chicago, Ill./Joliet Junior College/St. Laurence) each posted six hits on the day as the Saint Xavier University baseball team swept a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader from Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) Wednesday evening at Ed Glancy Field in Chicago.  The Cougars (34-18 overall/20-7 CCAC) took early leads in both games winning the first by a score of 9-2 and the second, 10-2.  SXU had its offense clicking from the onset with 16 hits in the opening game followed by 15 in the nightcap.

Sophomore right fielder Chris Klein (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) got the scoring started in Wednesday's first game with a RBI double in the top of the first inning.  Saint Xavier went ahead, 2-0, in the third when sophomore left fielder Brad Myjak (Tinley Park, Ill./Mount Carmel) drove in a run on an infield groundout.  An infield error by the Scarlet Hawks plated another run for SXU in the sixth and the Cougars put the game away with seven hits for six runs in the top of the seventh.  IIT got both its two runs in the bottom of the seventh off a homer and a RBI single.  Junior right-hander Mike Stirling (Thornton, Ill./Mount Carmel) logged the victory (5-0) going five innings and allowing three hits, no runs and no walks with four strikeouts.  Keating went 4-for-5 at the plate with a run scored and a RBI.

O'Shea had the hot bat in the late game going a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs scored.  He opened the game with triple, which helped spark a three-run frame for Saint Xavier.  The Cougars got four more runs in the top of the fourth highlighted by a RBI double from Myjak and a RBI single by Keating.  Trailing 7-0, Illinois Tech scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a RBI double and RBI single.  The rest of the game belonged to the Cougars with a sacrifice fly by Keating making the score, 8-2, in the sixth and two more runs in the seventh coming off another infield error by IIT.  Senior left-hander Michael Gaffigan (Orland Park, Ill./Western Carolina/Triton CC/Sandburg) notched the win (4-2) on the mound going six innings and giving up four hits, two runs (both earned) and two walks with four strikeouts. 

Saint Xavier (34-18 overall/20-7 CCAC) completes its 2012 regular season slate this weekend with a three-game conference series against Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.).  The Cougars host a nine-inning game against the Tigers on Friday, April 27, at 3:30 p.m. at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago.  SXU will honor its four seniors prior to the start of the game.  The Cougars then head to Bourbonnais, Ill., on Saturday, April 28, for a 12:30 p.m. doubleheader.
