CHICAGO – Posting just six hits on the day, the No. 22 ranked Saint Xavier University softball team had difficulty generating any offensive production against the tough pitching of William Penn University (Iowa) and dropped a pair of non-conference games Saturday afternoon at SXU Softball Field in Chicago.  The Cougars (29-14 overall) got shut out in both games dropping the first one, 3-0, and the second, 2-0.  The bright spot for SXU came from two solid pitching performances by senior right-hander Amie Brown (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) and sophomore righty Megan Nonnemacher (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community).  The WPU pitching staff racked up 12 total strikeouts over both games against Saint Xavier batters.

Brown went all seven innings of the first game and allowed five hits, three runs (one earned) and no walks with four strikeouts.  She falls to 12-4 overall this season with the tough loss.  The Cougars did not record their first hit of the day until the bottom of the sixth inning with freshman left fielder Megan James (Oak Forest, Ill./Marist) opening with a single to left field.  Senior catcher Ashley Hunter (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) got another single in the frame and SXU would load the bases with two outs, but a fielder's choice to third base ended the inning.  A single by freshman centerfielder Shannon Lauret (Beach Park, Ill./Zion-Benton) and two hit batters loaded the bases again in the seventh with two outs, but the game ended on a fly ball to right field.  WPU scored two of its three runs in the top of the second on a two-RBI single and the final run in the fourth on a RBI double.

Hunter and Lauret each posted a hit again in game two for a pair of Saint Xavier's three hits in the nightcap.  Both players got their singles in the bottom of the first inning.  The Statesmen got two RBI singles in the top of the third inning to score their only two runs of the game.  After the first inning, the Cougars did not get their third hit until the bottom of the seventh on a single to left field by freshman left fielder Samantha Saunders (Burbank, Ill./Reavis).  Nonnemacher took the loss (15-7) and gave up five hits, two runs (both earned) and two walks with five strikeouts.

Saint Xavier (29-14 overall/14-4 CCAC) plans to get back to its winning ways on Sunday, April 22, with a non-conference doubleheader against Lindenwood University-Belleville (Ill.).  The pair of home games will kick off at 12 p.m. at SXU Softball Field.
