CHICAGO – Behind five hits and four runs scored by senior shortstop Adam Koglin (Henderson, Nev./UNLV/Silverado), the Saint Xavier University baseball team won the first game of its three-game Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) series with Trinity Christian College (Ill.), 14-10, on a cold Friday afternoon at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago. The Cougars (31-17 overall/17-6 CCAC) belted out 16 hits over the nine-inning affair, including a big two-run blast over the right field wall by freshman left fielder Brad Myjak (Tinley Park, Ill./Mount Carmel) in the bottom of the fifth inning. Freshman right-hander Dan Wetzel (Tinley Park, Ill./Providence Catholic) threw well in relief and got the win (4-2) Friday for SXU going the final 4.1 innings and allowing just four hits, no runs and no walks with a pair of strikeouts.
After the Trolls put two runs up in the top of the first on a two-RBI double by freshman second baseman Peter Cupery, the Cougars responded in a big way in the bottom of the frame. Taking advantage of three singles, three walks and a key error in right field, Saint Xavier brought seven runs across home plate to go ahead, 7-2, after an inning of play. A RBI double by freshman third baseman Andy Kovarik (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) in the second gave SXU an 8-2 lead. A two-RBI single by TCC's senior catcher Adam Boyer made it, 8-4, in the top of the third, but the Cougars got the runs right back with a RBI single by Koglin and a sacrifice fly by sophomore right fielder Chris Klein (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) in the bottom half.
Trailing 10-4 after the third inning, the Trolls started clicking offensively scoring two runs in the fourth highlighted by a RBI double from senior third baseman Anthony Florenzl and getting four more in the fifth behind five hits to tie the game, 10-10. Myjak's two-run homer broke the tie in the bottom of the fifth and Wetzel came in and slowed down the TCC bats the rest of the way. A RBI double by Klein and a RBI single by Myjak scored SXU's final two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Myjak went 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBI. Kovarik posted three hits with two RBI, while Klein went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Junior left-hander Mike Klett (Plainfield, Ill./Western Michigan/Plainfield North) posted 10 strikeouts for SXU as the starting pitcher going 4.2 innings.
Saint Xavier (31-17 overall/17-6 CCAC) wraps up the series with the Trolls on Saturday, April 21, with a road doubleheader in Palos Heights, Ill. The first game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
