Milwaukee, Wis. – Led by solid efforts from junior Mike Stirling (Thornton, Ill./Mount Carmel) and senior second baseman Tom Simek (New Lenox, Ill./St. Laurence), the Saint Xavier University baseball team split a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader with Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.) Tuesday afternoon at WCTC Field in Milwaukee, Wis.  The Cougars (30-15 overall/16-6 CCAC) got a five-hit shutout from Stirling and three runs scored from Simek en route to a 14-0 victory in game one.  Unfortunately for SXU, the bats did not stay hot in the nightcap as the team totaled just seven hits in a 6-3 loss.  On the day, Simek combined for four hits, three runs scored and two RBI.

Stirling racked up five strikeouts and allowed just two walks over the entire seven innings of Tuesday's opening game.  He improved to 4-0 on the year with the victory.  Junior designated hitter Mike Klett (Plainfield, Ill./Western Michigan/Plainfield North) went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and three RBI; while Simek went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and a RBI.  Saint Xavier scored nine runs over the first two innings, including six runs in the top of the second, to pull away early for the game one win.
The Wolves got their offense clicking early in the day's second game scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning off four hits, including a two-RBI double.  Junior catcher Tony O'Shea (Valparaiso, Ind./Mount Carmel) would drive in a run on a groundout to second base in the top of the third to make it, 5-1.  However, CSU would get the run back in the bottom of the fourth on a RBI single.  A RBI single by Simek and a RBI double by freshman third baseman David Gunst (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) would plate two more runs for the Cougars in the top of the sixth, but that would be all the offense the team would get the rest of the game.  Freshman right-hander Andy Kovarik (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) suffered his first loss of the year (3-1) throwing all six innings and giving up seven hits, six runs (one earned) and two walks with three strikeouts.
Saint Xavier (30-15 overall/16-6 CCAC) returns to action on Thursday, April 19, with a non-conference doubleheader at home against Indiana Institute of Technology.  The first game of the doubleheader starts at 1:30 p.m. at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago.
