CHICAGO – Sophomore left fielder Brad Myjak (Tinley Park, Ill./Mount Carmel) went 4-for-6 at the plate with a pair of doubles and seven RBI as Saint Xavier University took the final game of its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) baseball series with Purdue University-North Central (Ind.), 17-9, Sunday afternoon at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago.  The Cougars (29-14 overall/15-5 CCAC) also played a seven-inning, non-conference game against the Panthers Sunday and fell, 15-14, in eight innings.  Over the two games Sunday, the SXU offense posted a combined 33 hits, including eight doubles and a home run.

The Cougars never trailed in Sunday's first game taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and then going up, 10-3, after four innings of play.  In addition to Myjak's big game, senior second baseman Tom Simek (New Lenox, Ill./St. Laurence) posted three hits with three runs scored and a RBI, while junior catcher Tony O'Shea (Valparaiso, Ind./Mount Carmel) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI.  Senior shortstop Adam Koglin (Henderson, Nev./UNLV/Silverado) was also key to the victory scoring a team-best four runs.  Sophomore right-hander Scott Vachon (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) got the win (4-2) allowing 15 hits, nine runs (eight earned) and a walk with five strikeouts over eight innings of work.

The non-conference game proved to be a slugfest as both teams combined for 38 hits and 29 runs.  Koglin had three hits for Saint Xavier with two RBI and a run scored, while sophomore right fielder Chris Klein (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) hit a pair of doubles in the game and tallied two RBI and a run scored as well.  Freshman second baseman David Gunst (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) had two hits and three RBI in the lead-off spot for the Cougars, while freshman catcher Marcos Soto (Chicago, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) scored three runs and drove in two RBI.  A solo homer by freshman third baseman Andy Kovarik (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) in the bottom of the seventh forced extra innings, but PUNC got a RBI double in the top of the eighth that proved to be the game-winner.

Saint Xavier (29-14 overall/15-5 CCAC) heads to Milwaukee, Wis., on Tuesday, April 17, for a conference doubleheader Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.).  The first game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. (central) start.
