Romeoville, Ill. – Despite four RBI on the day by sophomore right fielder Chris Klein (Huntley, Ill./Huntley), the Saint Xavier University baseball team lost a wild game with NCAA Division II Lewis University (Ill.), 15-14, Thursday afternoon at Brennan Field in Romeoville, Ill. The Cougars (27-12 overall) led 14-10 heading into the bottom of the ninth, but the Flyers posted five hits, including a pair of doubles, to score five runs in the final frame and rally for the victory. The SXU offense continued its recent surge Thursday with 11 hits toward its 14-run output. In fact, the Cougars have totaled an amazing 74 hits and 68 runs over their four games this week.
The Cougars wasted no time getting on the scoreboard with a RBI double to right-centerfield by senior shortstop Adam Koglin (Henderson, Nev./UNLV/Silverado) and a RBI groundout by Klein plating two runs in the top of the first inning. The Flyers would score six runs in the bottom of the second off five hits, including a three-RBI triple by freshman Mike Barajas and a solo homer from senior Mike Bolling. Trailing 6-2 heading into the top of the third, SXU would answer right back with five more runs highlighted by a three-run homer to left-centerfield by sophomore first baseman Thomas Keating (Chicago, Ill./Joliet Junior College/St. Laurence). Lewis would take advantage of three walks with two outs in the fifth inning and then back-to-back singles would lead to four more runs and a 10-7 lead for the home team.
However, the game was far from over as Klein hit a two-RBI double to centerfield in the top of the sixth to help cap a three-run frame for the Cougars and tie the game, 10-10. After a scoreless seventh inning, Saint Xavier would build a 14-10 advantage in the eighth behind RBI singles from Koglin and Klein as well as a two-RBI double to right field by sophomore left fielder Brad Myjak (Tinley Park, Ill./Mount Carmel). Unfortunately for SXU, the bats got hot for the Flyers as well in the bottom of the ninth and senior Michael Wido tied the game on a two-RBI double before Bolling secured the win with a RBI single to left field to score Wido. Klein suffered his first loss of the season (4-1) throwing the ninth inning. He allowed five hits, five runs (three earned) with no walks or strikeouts over two-thirds of an inning.
Saint Xavier (27-12 overall/13-4 CCAC) returns to conference play on Saturday, April 14, with a road doubleheader against Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Purdue University-North Central (Ind.). The first game is scheduled for a 12 p.m. (central) start in Whiting, Ind.
