Deerfield, Ill. – A 14-run first inning in game one set the tone as the Saint Xavier University baseball team exploded for 45 hits and 45 runs in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader sweep of Trinity International University (Ill.) Wednesday afternoon in Deerfield, Ill. Winning by scores of 27-6 and 18-6, the Cougars (27-11 overall/13-4 CCAC) scored at least a run in all, but three of the combined 14 innings of the twin bill and never trailed in either game. Senior shortstop Adam Koglin (Henderson, Nev./UNLV/Silverado) had one of the biggest performances of the day going a combined 8-for-13 with three doubles, five runs scored and seven RBI.
Sophomore right fielder Chris Klein (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) went 7-for-9 on the day with a double, seven runs scored and four RBI; while sophomore left fielder Brad Myjak (Tinley Park, Ill./Mount Carmel) was 7-for-12 with a homer, seven runs scored and eight RBI. In fact, junior catcher Tony O'Shea (Valparaiso, Ind./Mount Carmel) and sophomore first baseman Thomas Keating (Chicago, Ill./Joliet Junior College/St. Laurence) each posted home runs in Wednesday's opening game in addition to Myjak. O'Shea was 6-for-7 at the plate with six runs scored and four RBI and junior third baseman Mike Pokers (Lansing, Ill./Andrean) was also tough offensively for SXU going 5-for-10 with seven runs scored and three RBI. Junior right-hander Mike Stirling (Thornton, Ill./Mount Carmel) got the win (3-0) in game one going five innings and allowing eight hits, one run (earned) and no walks with five strikeouts. In game two, junior righty Lucas Fritsch (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) improved to 4-0 on the year by throwing five frames and giving up nine hits, six runs (two earned) and two walks with a strikeout.
Saint Xavier (27-11 overall/13-4 CCAC) heads to Romeoville, Ill., on Thursday, April 12, for a non-conference game against NCAA Division II Lewis University (Ill.). The nine-inning game is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start.
