CHICAGO – Belting out 32 hits over both games of Saturday's doubleheader, the Saint Xavier University baseball team completed its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) series sweep of Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) with a 9-2 game one victory and a 17-1 win in the nightcap at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago.  The Cougars (24-11 overall/11-4 CCAC) also got a pair of nice starts from junior left-hander Mike Klett (Plainfield, Ill./Western Michigan/Plainfield North) and senior lefty Michael Gaffigan (Orland Park, Ill./Western Carolina/Triton CC/Sandburg).  Klett threw the opener and improved to 3-3 overall after allowing six hits, two runs (both earned) and two walks with six strikeouts over the entire seven innings.  Gaffigan went five frames and gave up four hits, no runs and no walks with six strikeouts to move to 3-1 on the year.

There were no shortage of impressive offensive performers for SXU as well in Saturday's sweep.  Freshman infielder Andy Kovarik (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) had a huge day going a combined 5-for-7 with a grand slam (game two), two doubles, four runs scored and five RBI.  Junior third baseman Mike Pokers (Lansing, Ill./Andrean) also went 5-for-7 on the day with four runs scored and two RBI, while senior shortstop Adam Koglin (Henderson, Nev./UNLV/Silverado) was 4-for-9 with a double, two runs scored and three RBI.  Senior second baseman Tom Simek (New Lenox, Ill./St. Laurence) also racked up five hits for the Cougars to go along with a double, five runs scored and three RBI.  Sophomore left fielder Brad Myjak (Tinley Park, Ill./Mount Carmel) hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning of game one and freshman centerfielder Dan Wetzel (Tinley Park, Ill./Providence Catholic) recorded a two-RBI triple earlier in the game in the bottom of the second inning.  CCSJ scored the first run of the day in the top of the first inning of game one before SXU scored nine unanswered runs over the next five innings to pull away for good.  The second game was never close with the Cougars scoring six runs in the first and 10 runs in the third to go ahead 16-0.

Saint Xavier (24-11 overall/11-4 CCAC) takes off for Easter and returns to its schedule on Tuesday, April 10, with a non-conference game against NCAA Division I Northwestern University (Ill.).  The nine-inning affair is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start in Evanston, Ill.
