Palos Heights, Ill. – Senior shortstop/catcher Ashley Hunter (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) went a combined 3-for-7 at the plate with three runs scored and two RBI to lead the Saint Xavier University softball team to a doubleheader split with Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Trinity Christian College (Ill.) Thursday afternoon in Palos Heights, Ill. The Cougars (19-8 overall/4-2 CCAC) dropped the first game by a score of 5-1, but came back strong in the late game winning, 15-3, in five innings. Junior infielder Ashley Sullivan (Lemont, Ill./UW-Parkside/Lemont) also had a huge day offensively for SXU going 3-for-6 with a double, two runs scored and four RBI.
Sophomore right-hander Megan Nonnemacher (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) threw the first game for the Cougars and took the loss (10-4) going all six innings and allowing four hits, five runs (all earned) and no walks with seven strikeouts. Saint Xavier led 1-0 early after a RBI single by junior third baseman Kate Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) in the top of the first inning. Junior catcher Nicole Stuczynski tied the game in the bottom of the second with a solo home run. SXU was limited to just three hits over the final six innings and the Trolls got two-run homers from sophomore first baseman Mattie McGuire and sophomore pitcher Brianna Brugioni in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively, to complete the game's scoring.
The Cougars made up for the lack of offense in the day's opener by cranking out 16 hits for 15 runs in the nightcap. Freshman designated hitter Sarah Saunders (Burbank, Ill./Reavis) had the best production of the game going a perfect 4-for-4 with a homer, a run scored and five RBI. Senior right-hander Amie Brown (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) earned the win on the mound for SXU throwing all five innings and giving up just five hits, three runs (one earned) and a walk with three strikeouts. She improves to 7-2 overall this season with the victory. Hunter and Mollohan each finished with three hits in Thursday‘s second game, while Sullivan went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI. The Cougars scored in every inning, except the fourth, en route to the big win.
Saint Xavier (19-8 overall/4-2 CCAC) takes the weekend off and returns to its regular season slate on Tuesday, April 3, with a conference doubleheader against Trinity International University (Ill.). The first game of the home doubleheader starts at 3 p.m. at the SXU Softball Field in Chicago.
