Indianapolis, Ind. – Led by shutouts from senior Amie Brown (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) and sophomore Megan Nonnemacher (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community), the Saint Xavier University softball team continued its winning ways (eight game win streak) with a non-conference doubleheader sweep of No. 25 ranked Marian University (Ind.) Sunday afternoon in Indianapolis, Ind. The Cougars (17-6 overall) benefited from a wild pitch in the top of the first inning to score the only run of the game for a 1-0 victory in the opener and then belted out 12 hits for six runs in a 6-0 win in the late game. With the losses, the Knights fall to 15-4 overall this season and were swept in a doubleheader for the first time since the 2008 campaign.
Brown was sensational on the mound in the first game, which proved to be a pitcher's duel between her and Marian junior starter Emily Gwaltney. Brown threw all seven frames and allowed just three hits and three walks with three strikeouts for her sixth victory (6-3) and second shutout of the year. Gwaltney was just as tough throwing a complete game one-hitter, but falling behind 1-0 after a wild pitch scored freshman centerfielder Shannon Lauret (Beach Park, Ill./Zion-Benton). Lauret got on base after getting hit by a pitch in the game's first at-bat and stole second base to help put herself in position to score the go-ahead run. Freshman left fielder Megan James (Oak Forest, Ill./Marist) recorded Saint Xavier's lone hit of the game going 1-for-3.
Nonnemacher also had a stellar start on the mound for the Cougars in the nightcap, but the SXU offense gave her much more run support. She threw all seven innings and gave up eight hits and no walks with seven strikeouts to move to 9-3 on the season. Junior third baseman Kate Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) had the big bat in game two going a perfect 3-for-3 with a RBI, while sophomore first baseman Ariel Hinton (Crawfordsville, Ind./Crawfordsville) and freshman designated hitter Sarah Saunders (Burbank, Ill./Reavis) each posted two hits. The Cougars did most of their offensive damage in the top of the fifth inning plating four runs off RBI singles from Mollohan, James, Saunders and senior shortstop Ashley Hunter (Metamora, Ill./Metamora).
Saint Xavier (17-6 overall) returns to its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) slate on Tuesday, March 27, with a home doubleheader against Robert Morris University (Ill.). The first game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start at the SXU Softball Field in Chicago.
