South Bend, Ind. – Going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with a double, a run scored and two RBI, sophomore left fielder Brad Myjak (Tinley Park, Ill./Mount Carmel) led Saint Xavier University to a series sweep of Holy Cross College (Ind.) with a 9-1 victory in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) baseball action Sunday afternoon at Coveleski Stadium in South Bend, Ind. The Cougars (19-8 overall/6-1 CCAC) cranked out 14 hits in the nine-inning game, including four doubles and a triple. SXU also got a nice start on the mound from senior left-hander Michael Gaffigan (Orland Park, Ill./Western Carolina/Triton CC/Sandburg), who went eight innings and allowed just six hits, a earned run and two walks with five strikeouts. With the victory, he improves to 2-0 on the year.
The Saints got on the board first with a RBI single in the bottom of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. However, it was all Saint Xavier from there. The Cougars answered immediately with a triple by sophomore right fielder Chris Klein (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) to open the second inning and an infield error in the next at-bat brought him home to tie things up. Myjak would give SXU a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth with a RBI double to left field. Three hits and another fielding error led to three more runs for the Cougars in the sixth. The frame was highlighted by a RBI double from junior designated hitter Mike Klett (Plainfield, Ill./Western Michigan/Plainfield North).
Another error by the Saints led to another Saint Xavier run in the seventh to extend the lead to 6-1. A sacrifice fly by Klett and a two-RBI double from senior shortstop Adam Koglin (Henderson, Nev./UNLV/Silverado) in the top of the eighth plated three more runs and capped the scoring for the Cougars. Freshman righty Dan Wetzel (Tinley Park, Ill./Providence Catholic) closed out the game for SXU throwing the final inning and allowing no hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Klein also had a solid showing at the plate for the Cougars Sunday going 3-for-5 with a triple and three runs scored.
Saint Xavier (19-8 overall/6-1 CCAC) hosts a conference doubleheader against Robert Morris University (Ill.) on Wednesday, March 28. The first game starts at 1:30 p.m. at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago.
