CHICAGO - Sophomore righthander Joe Zotto (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) threw all seven innings and allowed just four hits, one run, and a walk with four strikeouts to help lead Saint Xavier University to a 15-1 victory over Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) baseball action Friday at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago. With the win, the Cougars (19-23 overall, 10-2 CCAC) continue to sit atop the league standings with a 10-2 mark and have a full game lead over University of St. Francis (Ill.) with eight CCAC games left to play.
At the plate for SXU, senior rightfielder Luke Gregerson (Lyons, Ill./Morton) helped lead the way going 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI, while senior shortstop Brendan Christy (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) went 2-for-2 with a homer, two walks, and four runs scored. Senior left fielder Chris Gruber (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) led the Cougars with the bat racking up three hits, all singles, while also recording two RBI. Zotto was on fire early on the mound allowing no hits and his lone walk through the first four innings of work. He improves to 3-1 overall on the season with the victory.
The Cougars (19-23 overall, 10-2 CCAC) heads to Deerfield, Ill., on Saturday, April 22, to play a conference doubleheader against Trinity International University (Ill.). Start time for Saturday's twinbill is 12 p.m.
