CHICAGO – Behind key offensive showings by sophomore outfielders Chris Klein (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) and Brad Myjak (Tinley Park, Ill./Mount Carmel), the Saint Xavier University baseball team swept a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader from Holy Cross College (Ind.) Saturday afternoon at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago. Myjak hit a pair of homers and a double to help the Cougars overpower the Saints, 10-2, in game one and then Klein went 2-for-3 with two runs scored to lead the charge in a 9-4 victory in the nightcap. With the sweep, SXU improves to 18-8 overall this season and is now 5-1 in conference play.
In the first game, the Cougars scored early and often plating three runs in the bottom of the first inning off three straight RBI hits by Klein, junior third baseman Mike Pokers (Lansing, Ill./Andrean) and Myjak, respectively. A solo shot down the right field line by Myjak gave SXU a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Myjak would strike again an inning later capping a five-run frame with a two-run blast to the same spot over the right field wall to extend the lead to 9-0. Holy Cross would answer with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth, but it would not be enough as a RBI on a fielder's choice by senior shortstop Adam Koglin (Henderson, Nev./UNLV/Silverado) in the bottom of the frame completed the game's scoring. Myjak went 3-for-3 in the game with two runs scored and four RBI, while Klein went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and three RBI. Junior left-hander Mike Klett (Plainfield, Ill./Western Michigan/Plainfield North) threw well going all seven frames and allowing seven hits, two runs (one earned) and two walks with three strikeouts. He is now 2-2 on the year with Saturday's victory.
Despite giving up two runs in the top of the first, the Cougars took advantage of four hits, six walks and a hit batsman to score nine runs in the bottom of the second. Koglin had one of the key at-bats in the frame with a two-out, two-RBI double to centerfield. The Saints would score two more runs in the top of the third, but the nine runs were more than enough to secure the 9-4 victory. Junior right-hander Lucas Fritsch (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) threw all seven innings for the Cougars and improved to 2-0 on the season with the win. He allowed eight hits, four runs (all earned) and three walks with five strikeouts.
Saint Xavier (18-8 overall/5-1 CCAC) wraps up its three-game conference series with the Saints on Sunday, March 25, with a nine-inning game in South Bend, Ind. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. (eastern) start at Coveleski Stadium in downtown South Bend.
