CHICAGO – Sophomore left fielder Brad Myjak (Tinley Park, Ill./Mount Carmel) hit a walk-off, three-run homer to lift the Saint Xavier University baseball team to a thrilling 10-8 victory in the second game of a doubleheader sweep of Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Roosevelt University (Ill.) Saturday afternoon at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago. The Cougars (15-7 overall/2-0 CCAC) also got a run in the bottom of the seventh inning of the day's first game to capture an exciting 7-6 win over the Lakers. Sophomore right fielder Chris Klein (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) had one of SXU's hottest bats Saturday going a combined 3-for-7 at the plate with two runs scored and three RBI.
Junior right-hander Mike Stirling (Thornton, Ill./Mount Carmel) got the start on the mound for the Cougars in game one and threw well allowing four hits, three runs (all earned) and no walks with five strikeouts over the game's first six innings. Saint Xavier used seven hits over the first six innings to build a 6-3 lead heading into the final frame. However, Klein came in to close out the game in the top of the seventh and allowed one hit, three runs (two earned) and two walks with a pair of strikeouts to tie things up, 6-6. Klein made up it in the bottom of the seventh though by recording a one-out, RBI single to give SXU the 7-6 decision. Klein finished with three hits and two RBI in the game, while sophomore designated hitter Scott Vachon (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI.
The Cougars were forced to play from behind for a majority of Saturday's second game after falling behind 2-0 heading into the bottom of the third inning. Fortunately for SXU, a two-RBI single by junior third baseman Mike Pokers (Lansing, Ill./Andrean) highlighted a four-run inning and gave the Cougars a 4-2 advantage heading into the fourth. A RBI single by senior second baseman Tom Simek (New Lenox, Ill./St. Laurence) in the fifth inning gave Saint Xavier a 5-2 cushion. The Lakers would get a run back in the top of the sixth and take back the 8-5 lead with five runs in the top of the seventh led by a three-run homer from sophomore third baseman Dylan Grabowski. The Cougars would take advantage of a single, a walk and a hit batsman to open the bottom of the seventh and that helped set the stage for Myjak's clutch walk-off homer.
Saint Xavier (15-7 overall/2-0 CCAC) hosts another conference doubleheader on Tuesday, March 20, when Judson University (Ill.) comes to Ferrell Field. The first game of the twin bill is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in Chicago.
