CHICAGO - A walk-off grand slam by senior left fielder Mary Kate Smith (Chicago, Ill./Maria) gave the Saint Xavier University softball team a dramatic 8-4 victory over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Trinity International University (Ill.) in the 10th inning of game one Saturday on "Senior Day" at the SXU Softball Field in Chicago. The Cougars (26-12 overall/14-3 CCAC) went on to claim a 2-0 victory over the Trojans in the day's second game to complete the conference doubleheader sweep.
In game two, senior shortstop Samantha Lovato (Oak Forest, Ill./Eisenhower) hit a towering shot over the wall in right field in the bottom of the fourth inning to give Saint Xavier a 1-0 lead. A RBI double in the sixth by freshman second baseman Rebekah Ruettiger (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) gave the Cougars an insurance run they would not need en route to the 2-0 victory. Junior Nicolle Bartels (Chicago, Ill./Marian Catholic) got the start and the win (9-4) in game two Saturday throwing a four-hit shutout.
Saint Xavier (26-12 overall/14-3 CCAC) has wrapped up its regular season slate and awaits its seed for next week's CCAC Softball Tournament. The tournament begins on Wednesday, May 2, and will be hosted by Saint Xavier University.
