Jackson, Tenn. – Behind the stellar offensive play of junior third baseman Kate Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew), the No. 24 ranked Saint Xavier University softball team split its four games at the Union University Softball Classic played at Fesmire Field this weekend in Jackson, Tenn.  The Cougars (9-6 overall) swept their two Friday games beating Davenport University (Mich.) in a tight one, 5-4, and then defeating Midway College (Ky.), 7-3.  However, the momentum did not carry over to Saturday's games as SXU lost to No. 21 ranked Columbia College (Mo.), 6-3, and then fell to No. 17 Union University (Tenn.), 2-0, in the tournament finale.  The Cougars were also scheduled to play a road doubleheader against the host Bulldogs on Thursday, March 8, but rain forced a cancellation of the twin bill.

Mollohan went a combined 7-for-13 at the plate with two runs scored and five RBI over the four-game stretch to lead the Saint Xavier offense on the weekend.  In the first game against Davenport, the game was tied, 2-2, heading into the seventh inning and things looked bleak for the Cougars after the Panther scored two runs in the top of the frame.  However, Mollohan came up big with a two-out, two-RBI single to tie the game and then scored the game-winning run on a RBI single by junior shortstop Ashley Sullivan (Lemont, Ill./UW-Parkside/Lemont).  Freshman outfielder Megan James (Oak Forest, Ill./Marist) joined Mollohan with three hits and a run scored in the game.  Senior Amie Brown (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) notched the win (3-1) for SXU throwing all seven frames and allowing eight hits, four runs (all earned) and two walks with six strikeouts.

In the victory over Midway, senior right-hander Nicole Derezinski (St. John, Ind./Andrean) picked up her first win of the season (1-1) throwing all seven innings and giving up just seven hits, three runs (one earned) and no walks with three strikeouts.  Saint Xavier did most of its damage in the top of the third inning scoring six runs to build an early 6-1 cushion.  Freshman centerfielder Shannon Lauret (Beach Park, Ill./Zion-Benton) had the big hit of the game with a two-out, two-RBI single to shallow right field in the third inning.

Mollohan and Sullivan each posted two hits to lead the Cougars in Saturday's opening game against Columbia, but the rest of the team could only muster two more hits as the Cougars were limited to just six in the ballgame.  Mollohan had a double, a run scored and a RBI, while Sullivan plated two runs in the top of the third with a two-RBI single.  SXU led 3-1 after four innings, but gave up five runs over the final three frames to lose the game.  Sophomore righty Megan Nonnemacher (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) took the loss (5-3) going all six innings and allowing six hits, six runs (five earned) and two walks with six strikeouts.  The Cougar offense was held in check in Saturday's finale against Union posting just two total hits.  Brown got the loss (3-2) throwing all six frames and giving up seven hits, two runs (one earned) and two walks with four strikeouts.

Saint Xavier (9-6 overall) hosts its first home doubleheader of the 2012 season on Saturday, March 17, with a non-conference match-up against Clarke University (Iowa).  The first game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at the SXU Softball Field in Chicago.
