CHICAGO – Junior outside hitter Aaron Porter (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) notched match-bests of nine kills and five service aces to lead the Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team to a dominating win over Mid-America Men's Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference (MAMVIC) rival Robert Morris University (Ill.) Wednesday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (6-14 overall/4-8 MAMVIC) took the match in three sets with scores of 25-15, 25-20 and 25-8. SXU had the best team attack percentage for a match in the program's three-year history at .443 with 35 kills and only eight attacking errors. Saint Xavier got off to a hot start with an attack percentage of .632 (14 kills, two errors) in the opening set.
Sophomore outside hitters Evan Muys (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) and Justin Cousin (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) each racked up eight kills in the big victory. Muys also finished with a match-high seven digs. Freshmen setters Jim Boyce (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) and Dan French (Chicago, Ill./Notre Dame) finished with 15 and 14 assists, respectively. Freshman middle blocker Sean Blackwood (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) had a nice night as well for the Cougars with five kills and three block assists. The Eagles were led offensively by sophomore Tyler Boyce and freshman Jordan Smith with six kills apiece. SXU took advantage of a number of miscues by RMU, including 22 attacking errors and 10 service errors in the match.
Saint Xavier (6-14 overall/4-8 MAMVIC) continues its season on Monday, March 12, with a non-conference match against Rust College (Miss.). The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at the Shannon Center.
