CHICAGO - Despite five hits, four runs scored, and two stolen bases on the day for senior right fielder Nicole Barker (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic), the Saint Xavier University softball team fell just short in game one and split a doubleheader with Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Robert Morris College (Ill.) Friday at the SXU Softball Field in Chicago. The Cougars (24-12 overall/13-3 CCAC) gave up two runs in the top of the seventh inning to fall, 4-3, in game one, but had a huge offensive output in the second game en route to a 10-0 victory in just five innings.
RMC kicked off the scoring in game one with a RBI single by junior infielder Katelyn Contreras to give the Lady Eagles an early 1-0 advantage. SXU tied the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the third when senior shortstop Samantha Lovato (Oak Forest, Ill./Eisenhower) brought home Barker from second on a RBI single to left field. In the fifth, Robert Morris got another RBI single from Contreras to take a 2-1 lead, but it was short-lived as the Cougars again tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on a second RBI single by Lovato. Saint Xavier took its first lead of the game, 3-2, in the sixth when sophomore designated player Megen Friscia (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) recorded a RBI to bring sophomore pinch runner Holly Kennedy (Bloomington, Ill./University) home from third. However, a wild pitch and a third RBI single by Contreras plated two runs for the Eagles in the final inning to help them secure the 4-3 victory.
The second game of the day was a completely different affair as the SXU offense exploded for 10 hits and 10 runs and cruised to a 10-0 win in five innings. Both Lovato and sophomore third baseman Gianna Pavone (Orland Park, Ill./St. Joseph's College) went 1-for-2 with three RBI in game two, while senior centerfielder Marie Barker (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and a RBI. Friscia also had a big game at the plate in the nightcap going 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, two runs scored, and a RBI. Freshman righthander Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) threw a two-hit shutout in game two going all five innings with three walks and a strikeout. It was her ninth victory of the season (9-4).
Saint Xavier (24-12 overall/13-3 CCAC) wraps up its regular season and conference slate on Saturday, April 28, with a home doubleheader against Trinity International University (Ill.). The doubleheader is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start Saturday at the SXU Softball Field in Chicago. It also marks "Senior Day" for the five seniors on the Cougar roster this season.
