Winter Haven, Fla. – Led by the hot bats of senior shortstop Adam Koglin (Henderson, Nev./UNLV/Silverado) and junior catcher Tony O'Shea (Valparaiso, Ind./Mount Carmel), the Saint Xavier University baseball team wrapped up the final four games of its nine-day Florida trip over the weekend. The Cougars (13-7 overall) won the first game against Warner Southern University (Fla.), 16-8, Saturday, but dropped the second game to the Royals later that day by a score of 12-2. On Sunday, SXU fell to Lourdes University (Ohio), 10-6, in the early morning game and was forced to take a forfeit in its finale with Point Park University (Pa.) due to lack of pitching. O'Shea and Koglin each finished the three-game stretch with six hits and combined for seven runs scored and eight RBI.
In the big victory over Warner Southern Saturday, the Cougars were impressive at the plate totaling 19 hits as a team en route to their 16-run output. The game was tied, 8-8, heading into the ninth inning before Saint Xavier exploded for eight runs in the top of the frame to get the win. The surge was driven by two-RBI singles from senior second baseman Tom Simek (New Lenox, Ill./St. Laurence), O'Shea and Koglin, respectively. Sophomore right-hander Chris Klein (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) got the win in relief of senior starter Michael Gaffigan (Orland Park, Ill./Western Carolina/Triton CC/Sandburg). Klein threw the final three innings and gave up just two hits, no runs and a walk with one strikeout, while Gaffigan went six innings and allowed 12 hits, eight runs (four earned) and three walks with a strikeout. Klein improved to 2-0 on the year with the victory.
In the nightcap against Warner Southern, O'Shea and freshman infielder David Gunst (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) each posted two hits, but SXU could not recover after falling behind 9-1 over the first four innings. Gunst hit a solo homer to kick off the third inning and logged the only RBI for the Cougars in the game. Sophomore righty Dan Maton (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) took the loss (0-1) on the mound throwing the first three frames and giving up five hits, six runs (three earned) and five walks with two strikeouts. SXU also committed three errors in the game.
In the Sunday morning game with Lourdes, Saint Xavier scored four runs in the top of the first inning to take an early lead, but could not slow down the Gray Wolves offensively allowing 10 runs over the first five frames. O'Shea and Koglin each went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Cougars with O'Shea scoring two runs and Koglin recording two RBI. Freshman right-hander Bryan Villanova (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) suffered the loss on the mound (0-1) going four innings and allowing 13 hits, 10 runs (all earned) and a walk. Freshman first baseman Andy Kovarik (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) hit a two-run homer and sophomore left fielder Brad Myjak (Tinley Park, Ill./Mount Carmel) notched a two-RBI double to plate SXU's four runs in the first inning. Koglin hit a two-RBI double in the top of the seventh to wrap up the scoring.
Saint Xavier (13-7 overall) is off until Saturday, March 17, when the team opens up its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) slate with a home doubleheader against Roosevelt University (Ill.). The first game of the twin bill is scheduled for a noon start at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago.
