CHICAGO –Juniors Dominique Harvey (Chicago, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) and Anthony Grant (South Holland, Ill./Prairie State CC/Thornridge) stole the show combining for 40 points to lead No. 3 seed Saint Xavier University to a 92-76 win over No. 6 seeded Roosevelt University (Ill.) in first round action of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Division I Men's Basketball Tournament Tuesday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (23-8 overall/7-3 CCAC) shot an impressive 61 percent (36-for-59) from the field in the game. Harvey went 11-for-13 from the field for a game-best 22 points to go along with seven rebounds, while Grant dropped 18 points on the Lakers on efficient 6-for-8 shooting.
The game got off to a slow start with Saint Xavier unable to take care of the basketball and Roosevelt unsuccessful in getting its shot attempts to fall. Midway through the first half, the Cougars got into a rhythm and used a 20-8 scoring run to pull away for good. Grant initiated the run with a pair of lay-ups on back-to-back possessions, including one for a three-point play. SXU shot 56 percent (18-for-32) and poured in 30 points in the paint in first-half action, while the Lakers hit just 31 percent (10-for-32) from the floor and only eight points down low in the opening frame. The Cougars went ahead by as many as 20 points and took a 16-point lead, 43-27, into the halftime break.
In the second half, Roosevelt played hard and cut the deficit to eight points multiple times in the final 10 minutes of play. However, Harvey seemed to have an answer for all of RU's rally attempts and made some big shots, including three dunks, down the stretch to shut down any comeback. The Lakers were led by sophomore guard Kyle Miklasz with 21 points off 8-for-12 shooting from the field, including five three-pointers. He was the only Roosevelt player to score in double figures Tuesday. Three other Cougars tallied double digits in scoring in Tuesday's postseason victory with sophomore guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) getting 14 points, sophomore forward Mark Peters (Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy) scoring 13 points and junior point guard Roosevelt Green (Markham, Ill./Tinley Park) chipping in 12. Green also recorded a game-best eight assists.
Saint Xavier (23-8 overall/7-3 CCAC) now heads to Bourbonnais, Ill., on Thursday, March 1, for a semifinals match-up against No. 2 seed Olivet Nazarene University. The game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start at McKie Arena.
