CHICAGO – Lauren Young, a senior defensive specialist/libero at LaPorte High School in LaPorte, Ind., recently signed a letter of intent to continue both her athletic and academic career at Saint Xavier University as a member of the Cougar women's volleyball program. The LaPorte native will be a freshman at SXU in the fall of 2012 and compete for playing time on the court starting this August. According to SXU head volleyball coach Robert Heersema, Young has the skills necessary to provide an immediate impact on the team.
Young is the daughter of Bret and Miki Young of LaPorte. She was coached by MaryBeth Lebo at LaPorte High School. Young is looking to pursue a degree in graphic design starting next year at Saint Xavier University. The Slicers finished their 2011-12 season with a 22-14 overall record.
"Lauren is going to be able to come in right away and help us out as a defensive player," said Heersema. "She comes from a very successful high school volleyball program at LaPorte. That was one of the things that excited me the most about her in that she already has a great base to build from."
