CHICAGO - For the second time in as many weeks, the Saint Xavier University men's track team qualified another relay team for the 2012 NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships. This time, it was the 4x800 relay team consisting of sophomore Shane Kenney (Porter, Ind./Chesterton), senior Daniel Hasty (Oak Lawn, Ill./Brother Rice), senior Brandon Hummer (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) and sophomore Brian Corcoran (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice). The Cougars covered the 3200-meter distance in a time of 7:56.00 at the DePauw Classic in Greencastle, Ind. The time was sufficient to qualify for the "A" standard for the national meet held in Geneva, Ohio, on March 1-3.
"It is very gratifying that some of the members of this relay team sacrificed their individual pursuits to further the chances of this relay team," said SXU men's track coach Ed McAllister. "That truly personifies the spirit of the word ‘team.' It will be difficult to decide which of our two relays will be our major concern at Nationals. That is a nice problem to have. These guys gutted it out all the way. I am very proud of their accomplishments.
"This group has been beset by numerous injuries and we were running out of opportunities to qualify," continued McAllister. "I felt strongly about this group, but you always have reservations. They handled the pressure well and I feel that they will perform well at the national meet."
It was an extra extra busy day for McAllister, who split his team between the DePauw Classic and the Margaret Bradley Invite hosted by University of Chicago. Success was the key word of the day as the Cougars took two first places at the University of Chicago meet. Highlights from that meet were wins by sophomore Nick Pesek (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.75 seconds and freshman John Stancato (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) taking the 200-meter dash in 23.64 seconds.
The 2012 NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships will take place from March 1-3 at the SPIRE Institute Track & Field Complex in Geneva, Ohio. The Cougars will have their 4x800 meter relay team and Distance Medley Relay team competing at the meet.
