CHICAGO - Freshman right fielder Tony Testin (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) went 2-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, and a RBI to help lead Saint Xavier University to a 9-3 win over Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) baseball action Tuesday in Chicago. The Cougars keep their lead atop the conference standings with a 13-2 mark and improve to 22-16 overall on the season with Wednesday's victory.
SXU scored four runs in the top of the first inning Wednesday sparked by a RBI double by Testin, which was one of five Cougar hits in the opening frame. A sacrifice fly by senior second baseman Craig Buske (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) in the second inning gave Saint Xavier a 5-0 lead before IIT scored a run in the bottom of the second off a sac fly as well. Down 5-1 in the third, the Scarlet Hawks posted a second run on a RBI single. Buske got another sacrifice fly RBI in the fourth inning to help add three more runs and give SXU an 8-2 lead after four innings of play.
Freshman centerfielder Zach Clements (Berwyn, Ill./Morton) posted a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning to record Saint Xavier's ninth and final run of the game. IIT scored its last run in the bottom of the seventh on a RBI single. Senior righthander Ryan Quigley (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) improved to 6-0 on the year with the victory Wednesday. Quigley pitched the first eight innings and allowed eight hits, three runs (all earned), and three walks with four strikeouts. In addition to Testin, freshman shortstop John O'Brien (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) also had a big game at the plate going 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.
Saint Xavier (22-16 overall/13-2 CCAC) will host NCAA Division I foe Chicago State University (Ill.) on Wednesday, April 25, at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field. The nine-inning affair is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
