CHICAGO - Saint Xavier University head baseball coach Mike Dooley was recently named the 2006 NAIA Region VII Baseball Coach of the Year following a vote of all NAIA baseball coaches in the region (Illinois and Iowa). Dooley had an impressive spring leading the Cougars to a NAIA Region VII Championship, a Heartland Super Regional title, and a berth in the NAIA World Series, their first since 1988.
"Any time you are recognized for an award determined by your peers, it is a great feeling," said Dooley. "This is truly a honor and it would not have been possible without the help of my talented staff and players. Everyone worked extremely hard this season to make our goals a reality."
SXU finished the 2006 season with an overall record of 33-27. The Cougars defeated Madonna University (Mich.) in the Heartland Super Regional best-of-three series to advance to the NAIA World Series before dropping two games to Bellevue University (Neb.) and 2006 champion Lewis-Clark State University (Idaho), respectively.
