Dayton, Tenn. – Senior transfer Adam Koglin (Henderson, Nev./UNLV/Silverado) did not waste any time making his presence felt on the 2012 Saint Xavier University baseball roster starting four games at shortstop and racking up 10 hits and six runs over four games as the Cougars went 3-1 in their opening weekend of play at the Tennessee Valley Invitational in Dayton, Tenn. SXU split its Friday games defeating University of Rio Grande (Ohio) 5-2 in the season opener, but falling 5-2 to host Bryan College (Tenn.) in the late game. The Cougars got back on track Saturday with a 9-2 victory over No. 23 ranked Madonna University (Mich.) and then a 10-8 win over Asbury University (Ky.). Saint Xavier got two nice starts out of junior right-hander Mike Stirling (Thornton, Ill./Mount Carmel) and sophomore righty Scott Vachon (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) against Rio Grande and Madonna, respectively.
In the victory over Rio Grande Friday, junior catcher Tony O'Shea (Valparaiso, Ind./Mount Carmel) and freshman centerfielder Tyler Peper (New Palestine, Ill./New Palestine) each posted two hits to lead the offensive attack for the Cougars. Koglin scored two runs, while sophomore first baseman Thomas Keating (Chicago, Ill./Joliet Junior College/St. Laurence) and junior third baseman Mike Pokers (Lansing, Ill./Andrean) each recorded a pair of RBI. Saint Xavier trailed 2-1 heading into the final inning before Keating hit a two-RBI single to give his team the lead and Pokers added some insurance with a two-RBI double later in the frame. Stirling threw six innings as the starter and allowed two hits, two runs (one earned) and two walks with three strikeouts. Senior righty Austin Lehmann (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka) threw the last inning and had two strikeouts and the save (1).
Koglin went 2-for-2 at the plate in the loss to Bryan College, but the Cougars gave up four combined runs over the fourth and fifth innings to lose an early 2-1 advantage. Junior left-hander Mike Klett (Plainfield, Ill./Western Michigan/Plainfield North) took the loss for SXU throwing four innings and giving up six hits, five earned runs and a walk with three strikeouts. Saint Xavier blasted 16 hits, including four doubles and a home run, in its big 9-2 win over No. 23 Madonna Saturday morning led by a 4-for-4 showing at the plate for Koglin. Pokers notched the homer for the Cougars. Vachon was impressive on the mound for SXU throwing six innings and allowing six hits and an earned run with eight strikeouts.
In the leadoff role, Koglin shined again in the 10-8 win over Asbury University Saturday afternoon going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. The Cougars overcame three fielding errors to break an 8-8 tie with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and held on for the victory. Sophomore left fielder Brad Myjak (Tinley Park, Ill./Mount Carmel) had a double and two runs scored, while Pokers had two hits, including a double, and a RBI. Junior righty Lucas Fritsch (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) got the win for SXU throwing all seven innings and allowing nine hits, eight runs (three earned) and six walks with four strikeouts.
