CHICAGO – Sophomore guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) led the way with 29 points and 11 rebounds as Saint Xavier University rolled to a 90-53 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) win over Indiana University-South Bend (IUSB) Saturday afternoon at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (20-8 overall/5-3 CCAC) dominated from the opening tip jumping out to an 8-0 lead in the first five minutes and never trailing en route to the 37-point victory. In fact, SXU shot a stellar 63 percent (32-for-51) from the field with Karp again leading the way shooting at an impressive 82 percent clip (9-for-11). The Titans struggled offensively throughout the contest shooting just 30 percent (18-for-61) from the floor, including just 19 percent (5-for-19) in the first half.
Other key contributors for Saint Xavier on the afternoon were junior point guards Roosevelt Green (Markham, Ill./Tinley Park) and Anthony Grant (South Holland, Ill./Prairie State CC/Thornridge). Green finished with 16 points and game-high six assists, while Grant was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field for 14 points. The Cougars came out on fire shooting 70 percent (16-for-23) in the opening frame to build a 39-20 halftime advantage. The second half proved to be more of the same as SXU kept the lead at 30 or more points for most of the period. IUSB was led by sophomore guard Chris Beam with 20 points. Senior forward Brian Sherwood (Oak Forest, Ill./Judson University/Oak Forest) was tough defensively for the Cougars with three blocked shots and a pair of steals.
Saint Xavier (20-8 overall/5-3 CCAC) will make its way down to Joliet, Ill., on Wednesday, February 22, for a conference match-up against rival University of St. Francis (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
