Bourbonnais, Ill. - Despite 19 points by senior guard Ed Gilgenbach (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac), the Saint Xavier University men's basketball team could not complete a late rally attempt and fell to Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) rival Olivet Nazarene University, 85-77, Tuesday evening at McKie Arena in Bourbonnais, Ill. The Cougars (19-8 overall/4-3 CCAC) trailed for most of the game, but a three-pointer by Gilgenbach with 3:10 to play trimmed what was as much as a 10-point, second-half deficit to a one-possession game, 76-73. However with 36 seconds to play, ONU senior guard Antonio Marshall sank a three-pointer from the top of the key and was fouled to complete a four-point play making the score, 84-77, and sealing the victory.
Sophomore guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) finished with 13 points for SXU, while junior point guard Anthony Grant (South Holland, Ill./Prairie State CC/Thornridge) and freshman guard Jack Krieger (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) each chipped in 11 points. The Cougars hit just 38 percent (26-for-68) of their shots from the field, most of the shooting struggles coming in the second half. Marshall led the Tigers on the night with a game-high 24 points. Olivet led 45-42 at halftime, but used a 14-7 run to open the second half and build a 10-point advantage, 59-49, with 13:20 to play in regulation.
Saint Xavier (19-8 overall/4-3 CCAC) continues conference play on Saturday, February 18, hosting Indiana University-South Bend (IUSB) at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The game is slated for a 3 p.m. start.
