CHICAGO – Saint Xavier University recently hired Mike Mandakas as head coach of the newly formed men's and women's golf teams set to begin competition during the 2012-13 academic year. Mandakas joins the Cougar staff with over 10 years of experience as a Golf Professional around the Chicagoland area having previously worked at Olympia Fields and Medinah Country Clubs. He currently owns and manages The Players Club of Chicago, a golf learning center in Justice, Ill. Mandakas is a Class A Member of the Professional Golfers Association of America and excited about the opportunity to build the SXU golf program from the ground up.
"As a PGA Professional, I am extremely honored and excited to be given the opportunity to lead the men's and women's golf teams at Saint Xavier University," said Mandakas. "The addition of these two programs at this highly respected university will add value to an existing tradition of graduating student-athletes and winning teams. My goal is to bring in talented athletes, who will build successful golf programs, while receiving an excellent education."
Mandakas graduated from William Woods University (Mo.) in 2001 with a degree in business management and marketing. He was a scholar-athlete and two-year letter winner in both golf and soccer. As a Golf Professional, Mandakas won the 2009 Taylor Made Pro-Am Invitational in Puerto Vallerta, Mexico, in addition to the 2010 and 2007 Las Vegas Pro-Am Invitationals. He also spent nearly two years at the Desert Mountain Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, where he assisted legendary golf teacher Jim Flick with golf clinics and lessons.
"We are extremely pleased to announce Mike Mandakas as Saint Xavier's new head golf coach," said SXU Athletics Director Bob Hallberg. "Mike came in with impressive credentials and we want the golf programs to follow the same tradition of excellence that our current teams maintain. I think he will do a great job of building teams that compete well in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference and NAIA."
Mandakas will start recruiting immediately for both the men's and women's teams. The programs will begin competing this fall. The NAIA National Championships for both teams take place annually in May.
