CHICAGO – Junior point guard Anthony Grant (South Holland, Ill./Prairie State CC/Thornridge) and sophomore guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) combined for 42 points to lead Saint Xavier University to an 81-64 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) victory over Roosevelt University (Ill.) Saturday afternoon at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Karp led the way with game-bests of 23 points and 11 rebounds, while Grant was a huge spark off the bench with 19 points, including a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw stripe. The Cougars (19-7 overall/4-2 CCAC) led by double figures for a majority of the second half after leading 40-33 at halftime. SXU was able to push the lead to as many as 20 points in the closing minutes.
Senior guard Ed Gilgenbach (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) and junior point guard Roosevelt Green (Markham, Ill./Tinley Park) each finished with 11 points and six rebounds Saturday. Green also tallied four assists, three steals and two blocks. The Cougars got off to a sluggish start hitting just 37 percent (13-for-35) of their shot attempts in the first half, but a late 10-4 run in the frame helped them take a seven-point lead into the locker room. Senior guard Mark Tometich led the Lakers with 17 points, including a game-best four three-pointers.
Saint Xavier (19-7 overall/4-2 CCAC) heads down to Bourbonnais, Ill., on Tuesday, February 14, for a conference match-up against Olivet Nazarene University. The game is slated for a 7:30 tip-off.
