Kenosha, Wis. – Despite nine kills by junior outside hitter Aaron Porter (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South), the Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team fell to No. 1 ranked Carthage College (Wis.) in three sets (10-25, 18-25 and 19-25) Saturday afternoon at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis. Carthage College is ranked first in the February 7 edition of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) NCAA Division III poll, while SXU plays in the NAIA and the Mid-America Men's Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference (MAMVIC). With the win, the Redmen improve to 6-1 on the season, while the Cougars fall to 4-9 overall.
Freshman setter Dan French (Chicago, Ill./Notre Dame) led the Cougars with 15 assists, while sophomore right side Evan Muys (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) tallied a team-best six digs. Seniors Tyler Frings and Randy Hansen each led Carthage offensively with 11 kills apiece. SXU started off solid in the first set, but with the score tied 5-5, the Redmen went on a 17-4 run to take a 22-9 lead. Carthage carried that momentum through the rest of the match using key runs in the remaining two sets to pull away for the victory.
Saint Xavier (4-9 overall/2-5 MAMVIC) returns to conference play on Wednesday, February 15, hosting Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.). The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
