CHICAGO - Saint Xavier University senior guard Marissa Young (Monroe, Wis./St. Joseph's College/Monroe) was recently named to the 2011-12 Capital One Academic All-District Women's Basketball Team. Student-athletes receiving this distinction are chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) andrecognized as the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Young was one of just eight players named First Team Academic All-District in District Three (Illinois, Indiana and Michigan) of the College Division, which combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
Last season, Young was one of just 15 players nationwide to earn a spot on 2010-11 Capital One Academic All-America Women's Basketball Teams with a spot on the third team squad. She is currently second in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) in scoring averaging 16.2 points per game and leads the conference in steals averaging 3.6 per game. Young is majoring in biology (pre-medicine) at Saint Xavier University and carries a 3.96 cumulative grade-point average (GPA). As a first team all-district honoree, Young will now advance to the national Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where First, Second and Third Team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
Saint Xavier (17-6 overall/4-1 CCAC) heads to Palos Heights, Ill., on Wednesday, February 8, for a non-conference road game against Trinity Christian College. The game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
