South Bend, Ind. - Sophomore guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) led Saint Xavier University with 20 points and nine rebounds, but it was not enough to offset a rough first half for the visitors in a 70-62 road loss to Indiana University-South Bend (IUSB) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) men's basketball action Saturday afternoon in South Bend, Ind. The Cougars (16-6 overall/2-1 CCAC) shot just 39 percent from the field (9-for-23) and racked up 10 turnovers in the opening frame allowing the Titans to build a 29-22 halftime advantage. The seven-point lead proved to be all IUSB needed for momentum as the hosts quickly established a double-digit lead after the break and never trailed in second-half action.
Senior guard Ed Gilgenbach (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) and junior forward Dominique Harvey (Chicago, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) were the other two Cougars to score in double figures Saturday. Gilgenbach finished with 11 points and team-best four assists, while Harvey chipped in 10 points. The game was back-and-forth for most of the first half with neither team having much success shooting the ball. However, with just under six minutes left in the first half, Indiana University-South Bend closed out the frame on a 10-2 run to build its halftime advantage. Senior forward Henry Smith led the Titans with 21 points and six rebounds on the afternoon. Smith shot an impressive 8-for-12 from the field in the game.
Saint Xavier (16-6 overall/2-1 CCAC) will host conference rival University of St. Francis (Ill.) on Wednesday, February 1. The home game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
