CHICAGO – Behind 10 kills and four service aces by junior outside hitter Aaron Porter (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South), the Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team logged its first win of the 2012 season defeating Robert Morris University (Ill.) in Mid-America Men's Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference (MAMVIC) play Monday night at Attack Athletics in Chicago. The Cougars (1-3 overall/1-3 MAMVIC) dropped the first set 22-25, but bounced back to take the next three 25-22, 25-12 and 25-19. The SXU offense warmed up as the match progressed with the team racking up an impressive .321 attack percentage (14 kills, five errors) in the fourth set.
Freshman setter Jim Boyce (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) played well for the Cougars totaling 30 assists and a pair of aces. In addition, freshman middle blocker Sean Blackwood (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) was solid offensively finishing with eight kills, while sophomores Evan Muys (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) and J.T. O'Connell (Evergreen Park, Ill./Brother Rice) each chipped in seven kills toward the winning effort. Freshman libero Adam Sieger (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) was tough on the defensive side with a match-best 11 digs.
Saint Xavier (1-3 overall/1-3 MAMVIC) continues conference play tonight with its home opener against Clarke University (Iowa). The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
