CHICAGO - Sophomore guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) accomplished a rare feat Saturday surpassing the 1,000-point milestone in just his second collegiate season as No. 21 ranked Saint Xavier University rolled to a 104-66 win over Purdue University-Calumet (Ind.) at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Karp finished the game with 22 points for the Cougars trailing only junior point guard teammate Roosevelt Green (Markham, Ill./Tinley Park) with game-bests of 32 points and six steals. SXU jumped out to a 20-7 lead in the game's opening five minutes and never trailed en route to the 38-point victory. With the win, the Cougars improve to 15-5 overall this season.
Karp and Green combined to shoot a stellar 18-for-26 (69 percent) from the floor in Saturday's victory. Senior guard Ed Gilgenbach (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) was key to the big offensive production with a game-high seven assists. Junior forward Dominique Harvey (Chicago, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) also had a nice game for SXU with 10 points and eight rebounds, while freshman guard Jack Krieger (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) provided a big lift off the bench with 13 points. The Cougars came out on fire shooting 62 percent (24-for-39) from the field to pull away early. Saint Xavier held a 59-39 lead at the halftime break. SXU also dominated on the boards holding a 46-18 advantage on the glass. Karp now has 1,001 points over his young career.
Saint Xavier (15-5 overall/1-0 CCAC) takes on Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) rival Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) for a key conference home match-up on Tuesday, January 24. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
