CHICAGO - Senior guard Marissa Young (Monroe, Wis./St. Joseph's College/Monroe) was one of four players to score in double figures as No. 11 Saint Xavier University got back to its winning ways with an 80-59 victory over Purdue University-Calumet (Ind.) in NAIA women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Shannon Center in Chicago. In addition, senior forward Brittany Jones (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) became SXU's all-time leader in blocked shots with 141 career blocks after picking up one Saturday afternoon. The Cougars used a 24-11 scoring run late in the first half to build a 48-29 halftime lead after the team shot an impressive 57 percent (20-for-35) from the field in the opening frame.
Young also finished Saturday's game with eight rebounds and six assists, while freshman guard/forward Morgan Stuut (Marcellus, Mich./Three Rivers) posted her ninth double-double of the season with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Senior forward Mary Kusner (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West) and freshman guard/forward Suzie Broski (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) each chipped in 12 points toward the winning effort. Kusner was tough on the boards as well with nine rebounds. The Cougars used tough defense to frustrate the Peregrine shooters Saturday.
