Milwaukee, Wis. - Freshman guard/forward Suzie Broski (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) scored 20 points and pulled down seven rebounds, but No. 11 ranked Saint Xavier University struggled down the stretch and fell to No. 21 Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.), 64-59, in NAIA women's basketball action Thursday night at Panella Court in Milwaukee, Wis. The Cougars (13-5 overall) led 34-31 at the half, but scored just 25 points after the break. The Wolves were tough on the boards throughout the night winning the rebounding battle, 46-32. In fact, CSU had 20 of its 46 rebounds come on the offensive end.
Senior guard Marissa Young (Monroe, Wis./St. Joseph's College/Monroe) had a solid all-around outing for SXU with 15 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals. Freshman guard/forward Morgan Stuut (Marcellus, Mich./Three Rivers) finished with eight points and seven rebounds for the Cougars. Turnovers and fouls also hurt SXU in Thursday's loss. The Cougars totaled 21 turnovers and also had 21 fouls in the game with two of their starters fouling out. The Wolves were led by freshman forward Michelle Piepenberg with 24 points and 11 rebounds.
Saint Xavier (13-5 overall/1-0 CCAC) takes on Purdue University-Calumet (Ind.) for a non-conference match-up on Saturday, January 21. The home game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
