CHICAGO - Five different players scored in double figures as No. 21 ranked Saint Xavier University pulled away late in the second half for an 80-68 win over Purdue University-North Central (Ind.) in NAIA men's basketball action Tuesday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Sophomore guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) led the Cougars with 22 points on 8-for-15 shooting from the field on the night. Junior point guard Anthony Grant (South Holland, Ill./Prairie State CC/Thornridge) also tallied 13 points for SXU, while junior forward Dominique Harvey (Chicago, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) posted 12 points and team-best eight rebounds.
Senior forward Zach Opheim (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) was also tough for the Cougars shooting 5-for-7 from the floor for 11 points to go along with five rebounds. Freshman guard Jack Krieger (Plainfield, Ill../Plainfield North) had a solid outing as well with 10 points off the bench. SXU took an early 10-2 lead in the game's opening three minutes and never trailed in the first half en route to a 34-30 halftime lead. The Panthers rallied in the second half and took their first lead of the game, 42-41, with 13:21 left to play in regulation. The game went back-and-forth over the next three minutes before SXU used a 12-1 scoring run to pull away for good. Krieger scored eight points, including a pair of three-pointers, during the run.
Saint Xavier (14-4 overall/1-0 CCAC) heads to Milwaukee on Thursday, January 19, for a non-conference game against Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.). The game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start.
