CHICAGO - Behind a game-high 20 points and team-best nine rebounds by sophomore guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso), the No. 25 ranked Saint Xavier University men's basketball team got back to its winning ways with a 66-56 road win over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Roosevelt University (Ill.) late Saturday night at Attack Athletics in Chicago. It was the conference opener for the Cougars and improved their season mark to 13-4 overall. Junior point guard Anthony Grant (South Holland, Ill./Prairie State CC/Thornridge) also scored in double figures for SXU with 12 points to go along with a team-leading three steals.
Junior point guard Roosevelt Green (Markham, Ill./Tinley Park) was solid as well posting nine points and game-high eight assists for the Cougars. Having played just one game over the last three weeks, Saint Xavier opened the game a little rusty and the Lakers were able to capitalize leading by as many as 15 points in first-half action and taking a 35-30 lead into the halftime break. With nine minutes remaining in the game and RU clinging to a 48-45 lead, SXU made its big push outscoring Roosevelt, 15-2, over the game's next six minutes to take control for good.
Saint Xavier (13-4 overall) continues its season on Tuesday, January 17, with a non-conference game against Purdue University-North Central (Ind.). The home game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
