Dubuque, Iowa – Junior outside hitter Aaron Porter (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) finished with 12 kills, eight digs and three block assists; but the Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team dropped its 2012 season opener to Mid-America Men's Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference (MAMVIC) foe Clarke University (Iowa) Friday evening at the Kehl Center in Dubuque, Iowa. The Cougars (0-1 overall) dropped the first set of the match, 25-23, but came right back and took set two, 25-23. Unfortunately for SXU, the third and fourth sets went to the Crusaders by scores of 25-18 and 25-19. The match was made up Friday evening after being postponed Thursday evening due to weather conditions.
Junior right side/middle blocker Evan Muys (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) had 10 kills and five digs for the Cougars, while freshman middle blocker Sean Blackwood (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) posted seven kills and three block assists. Freshman setter Jim Boyce (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) set up the offensive attack for SXU with 30 assists and was tough defensively as well with nine digs. Senior outside hitter Travis Gabehart led the Crusaders with 12 kills on the night.
Saint Xavier (0-1 overall/0-1 MAMVIC) continues its season and conference slate on Wednesday, January 18, with a road match against Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.). The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start in Milwaukee.
