West Palm Beach, Fla. - Despite team-bests of 25 points and nine assists by junior point guard Roosevelt Green (Markham, Ill./Tinley Park), the No. 22 ranked Saint Xavier University men's basketball team had its 11-game win streak snapped with a tough 102-78 road loss to No. 1 Northwood University (Fla.) Thursday night in West Palm Beach, Fla. The Cougars (12-4 overall) led 47-45 at the halftime break, but the Seahawks outscored the visitors, 57-31, in second-half action to secure the home victory. Junior forward Masse Doumbe was nearly unstoppable for Northwood finishing with game-bests of 38 points and 14 rebounds. He shot an impressive 13-for-20 (65 percent) from the floor on the night.
Sophomore guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) was the only other Cougar to score in double figures Thursday finishing with 18 points to go along with seven rebounds. Senior forward Zach Opheim (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) led SXU on the boards with eight rebounds. The game was knotted up at 57-57 with just under 13 minutes remaining in regulation when the Seahawks mounted an 11-0 run spurred by three consecutive Cougar turnovers. A three-pointer by Karp at the eight-minute mark cut the deficit to eight points, 76-68, but that was as close as SXU would get the rest of the way. Northwood used a 16-2 run over the game's next four minutes to pull away for good.
Saint Xavier (12-4 overall) opens its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) slate on Saturday, January 14, with a road game against Roosevelt University (Ill.). The game is scheduled for an 8 p.m. tip-off at Attack Athletics in Chicago.
