CHICAGO – For the second straight game, Saint Xavier University sophomore guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) topped the 30-point threshold dropping 31 points for No. 22 Saint Xavier University in an 80-69 win over Mount Marty College (S.D.) on the final day of the 2011 SXU Men's Basketball Midwest Tournament Thursday at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (12-3 overall) never trailed in the game and were able to pull away for good after building a double-digit lead early in the second half. Karp scored a career-high 38 points in last night's 85-79 victory over Siena Heights University (Mich.). He earned the tournament's Most Valuable Player (MVP) award after the game after pulling down a team-best 15 rebounds Thursday as well.
Junior point guard Anthony Grant (South Holland, Ill./Prairie State CC/Thornridge) had a solid overall outing for SXU with 16 points, six rebounds and five assists. Senior guard Nick Hastings (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) provided a big spark off the bench for the Cougars hitting four three-pointers en route to a 14-point performance. The Lancers were led by junior guard Joe Hieb with 25 points and three steals. After the game, senior forward Spencer Yackley earned the all-tournament recognition for Mount Marty College. SXU did not have its best shooting performance hitting just 37 percent (23-for-63) of its shot attempts. However, the Cougars tallied 50 rebounds and dished out 15 assists to stay ahead of the Lancers.
Saint Xavier (12-3 overall) takes some time off for the holiday season and returns to its regular season slate after the New Year. The Cougars head to Florida for a game against Northwood University (Fla.) on Thursday, January 5, 2012. The match-up is scheduled for a 7 p.m. (eastern) start.
