CHICAGO – Behind a game-best 22 points by junior point guard Anthony Grant (South Holland, Ill./Prairie State CC/Thornridge), the No. 22 ranked Saint Xavier University men's basketball team defeated No. 6 Indiana Wesleyan University (NAIA Division II), 71-58, Thursday afternoon at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (10-3 overall) extended their win streak to nine by shooting nearly 60 percent (16-for-27) in first-half action to take a 39-31 lead into the break. Sophomore guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) also played well for SXU with 18 points and team-bests of nine rebounds and four steals.
Sophomore forward Mark Peters (Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy) was the third Cougar to score in double figures in Thursday's victory scoring 12 points on 6-for-8 shooting from the floor. Grant also had a stellar shooting performance Thursday hitting 10 of his 13 shot attempts in the game. The great shooting helped as SXU committed an uncharacteristic 20 turnovers. The Wildcats were led by guard George Jones VI with 15 points. After building its halftime advantage, the Cougars continued to apply the pressure in the second half building as much as a 17-point lead.
Saint Xavier (10-3 overall) continues its season on Wednesday, December 21, as part of its own Midwest Tournament. The Cougars will take on Siena Heights University (Mich.) at 6 p.m. at the Shannon Center.
