CHICAGO – A short jumper in the lane by sophomore forward Mark Peters (Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy) in the closing seconds of regulation forced extra periods and No. 23 ranked Saint Xavier University capitalized with a 106-92 double-overtime victory over Huntington University (Ind.) in NAIA men's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Junior point guard Roosevelt Green (Markham, Ill./Tinley Park) led the way for the Cougars with 26 points and seven assists, while fellow junior point guard Anthony Grant (South Holland, Ill./Prairie State College/Thornridge) was key for SXU in a reserve role with 22 points and four steals. The visiting Foresters got a huge individual effort from senior forward Caleb Kennedy with 43 points and 10 rebounds.

Sophomore guard Brad Karp turned in a double-double performance for the Cougars with 19 points and 12 rebounds to go along with a team-best four blocks.  Senior guard Ed Gilgenbach (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) also scored in double figures with 18 points, while Peters chipped in 16 points toward the winning effort.  Saint Xavier did an excellent job of distributing and taking care of the basketball in the game recording 27 assists and committing just seven turnovers on the day.

Things did not go well early for SXU with Huntington hitting 54 percent of its first-half shots (14-for-26) and building a 46-32 halftime lead.  However, the second half was a different story as the Cougars shot a blistering 63 percent (20-for-32) after the break and erased the double-digit deficit.  Kennedy sunk two free throws with 27 seconds to play in regulation to give the Foresters a 76-74 advantage, but following a SXU timeout, Peters was able to tie things up with his last-second shot.  Senior forward Brian Sherwood (Oak Forest, Ill./Judson University/Oak Forest) hit a free throw in the final minute of the first extra period to tie the game at 86-86 and neither team could score in the closing seconds of the frame to send it to double overtime.  The Cougars were dominate in the second extra period outscoring the Foresters, 20-6, in the frame led by 10 points by Grant.

Saint Xavier (8-3 overall) heads up to Elgin, Ill., on Tuesday, December 13, to take on Judson University (Ill.) in a non-conference match-up.  The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
