Bourbonnais, Ill. – Saint Xavier University junior forward Brittany Jones (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) and freshman guard/forward Morgan Stuut (Marcellus, Mich./Three Rivers) both earned spots on the all-tournament team as the No. 13 ranked Cougars won two games in dominant fashion at the Olivet Nazarene University Holiday Inn Express Classic this weekend in Bourbonnais, Ill. SXU beat Houghton College (N.Y.), 86-44, on Friday night and then followed that up with a 90-60 victory over Harris-Stowe State University (Mo.) Saturday afternoon. Stuut combined for 42 points and 20 rebounds on the weekend, while Jones posted 24 total points and 16 boards.
Behind five players in double figures, Saint Xavier had little trouble pulling away early in its big win over Houghton Friday. Stuut had 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Jones also had a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. Senior forward Mary Kusner (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West) came off the bench to chip in 12 points. Freshman guard/forward Suzie Broski (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) also had a nice game with 11 points and senior guard Michelle Tourtillott (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) turned in 10 points and four assists. SXU shot 57 percent (33-for-58) from the field in the game and had a 46-31 rebounding edge on the night. The Cougars jumped out to a 21-6 lead in the opening 10 minutes and never looked back.
Stuut was huge in the second game as well Saturday against Harris-Stowe State dropping 27 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Broski finished with 14 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the field, while Jones had 13 points, six rebounds and a pair of blocks. The game was tight in the opening minutes, but SXU used a 14-2 run midway through the first half to build a 30-18 lead. The Cougars would maintain a double-digit edge the rest of the way, including a 44-26 lead at the half.
Saint Xavier (9-2 overall) has some time off before heading to Hawaii for the Hoop N' Surf Classic in Honolulu on December 17. The Cougars take on NCAA Division II University of Alaska-Anchorage on Monday, December 19, at 6 p.m. (central) and then wrap up the trip with a 6 p.m. (central) game against Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) on Tuesday, December 20.
