CHICAGO – Led by 35 points and 12 rebounds from sophomore guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso), the No. 24 ranked Saint Xavier University men's basketball team pulled away early for a 105-71 win over Indiana University-Northwest (Ind.) in the SXU Classic Saturday afternoon at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (5-3 overall) have now won four straight games and topped the century mark in the last three. Karp shot an impressive 14-for-20 from the field (70 percent) in Saturday's big win. SXU jumped out to an early 8-0 lead in the first three minutes of play and never looked back en route to the 34-point victory.
Sophomore forward Mark Peters (Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy) also scored in double figures for the Cougars with 13 points on 6-for-8 shooting. Sophomore guard Munir Smith (Hazel Crest, Ill./Mooseheart) provided a huge lift off the bench for Saint Xavier with a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds, while junior point guard Anthony Grant (South Holland, Ill./Prairie State CC/Thornridge) chipped in 14 points as well. SXU shot 57 percent (46-for-81) for the game and dominated on the boards out-rebounding IU-Northwest, 51-27. Junior forward Baile Barnett led the Red Hawks with 24 points and seven rebounds.
Saint Xavier (5-3 overall) takes on Holy Cross College (Ind.) in non-conference action on Tuesday, November 22. The home game will tip off at 7 p.m. at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
