CHICAGO – Senior guard Marissa Young (Monroe, Wis./St. Joseph's College/Monroe) finished with 22 points to lead all scorers, but it was not enough as the No. 13 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team fell to No. 6 Freed-Hardeman University (Tenn.), 69-54, Friday night at the Union University Rotary Classic in Jackson, Tenn. Young hit seven of her 13 shots from the field, but was the only SXU player to have a solid night shooting the ball as the team hit only 35 percent (22-for-63) of its attempts. The Cougars suffer their first loss of the season at 4-1 overall, while the Lady Lions improve to 5-0 on the year.
Freshman guard/forward Morgan Stuut (Marcellus, Mich./Three Rivers) posted eight points and eight rebounds for Saint Xavier. Freshman forward Hayley Newby tallied 20 points and six rebounds to lead Freed-Hardeman. The shooting struggles hurt SXU early in the ballgame as the Lady Lions were able to build a double-digit lead in first-half play and led 33-23 at the break. The Cougars could not get any momentum offensively in the second half to chip into the big deficit. Turnovers also hampered SXU as well with 19 miscues in the game.
Saint Xavier (4-1 overall) wraps up play in the Rotary Classic on Saturday, November 19, with a tough match-up against No. 2 ranked and host Union University (Tenn.). The game is scheduled for an 8 p.m. (central) tip-off.
