Deerfield, Ill. - With three players scoring at least 24 points, the No. 24 ranked Saint Xavier University men's basketball team used a strong second half to defeat Trinity International University (Ill.), 101-77, Wednesday night in Deerfield, Ill. The Cougars (3-3 overall) shot an amazing 67 percent (20-for-30) in second-half action and scored 54 points after halftime to pull away for the 24-point victory. Sophomore guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) led SXU with 27 points, while junior point guards Roosevelt Green (Markham, Ill./Tinley Park) and Anthony Grant (South Holland, Ill./Prairie State CC/Thornridge) each posted 24 points toward the winning effort.
Senior guard Ed Gilgenbach (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) narrowly missed a triple-double Wednesday finishing with 10 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Karp also helped lead the team on the boards along with Gilgenbach pulling down nine rebounds as well. Green was tough defensively for the Cougars racking up a game-best seven steals, while Gilgenbach totaled five thefts and Grant had four to make up the team's 16 steals on the night. For the game, Saint Xavier shot 57 percent (37-for-65) from the field and distributed the ball well with 23 assists. The Trojans were led by sophomore guard Dillon Wadsack with a game-best 30 points.
The Cougars came out strong and led by as many as 10 points, 25-15, after the opening eight minutes of play. The Trojans fought back and took their first lead of the game, 35-34, with just over six minutes remaining in the first half. TIU kept its lead for nearly the rest of the frame before a three-pointer by Green in the closing seconds gave SXU a 47-46 edge at the break. The second half was controlled by the Cougars with the visitors jumping out to a seven-point lead in the first five minutes of the period. SXU continued to build on its lead and pushed it to as many as 26 points late in the frame.
Saint Xavier (3-3 overall) hosts the four-team SXU Classic this weekend at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars will take on Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) at 8 p.m. on Friday, November 18, and then close out the tourney on Saturday, November 19, with a 3 p.m. contest against Indiana University-Northwest.
