Kansas City, Mo. - The Saint Xavier University men's soccer team will take on No. 17 ranked Taylor University (Ind.) for the 2011 NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship Opening Round on Saturday, November 19. The game will be played in Upland, Ind., but the game time for next Saturday has yet to be determined. The Trojans are in the midst of one of the best seasons in program history with a 19-1-1 overall record and their highest ever national rank (No. 17).
Taylor is making its first trip to the national tournament and coming off a 3-0 win over Spring Arbor University (Mich.) in the championship game of the Mid-Central Conference Tournament this past Saturday. It was the first conference tournament championship for the Trojans since 1997. The Cougars are making their second straight trip to the national tournament, the only two in program history. SXU dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker to No. 13 Grand View University (Iowa) in opening round play of the 2010 NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship. The Cougars defeated Judson University (Ill.), 2-1, Saturday evening to earn the automatic bid to this year's national tournament.
"I am really excited for this opportunity and for our team, mainly because of the adversity this group has had to overcome just to get to this point," said SXU men's soccer coach Ed Vucinic. "Between injuries and the ups and downs of playing a very tough schedule, our guys have stuck together and remained focused and getting back to the national tournament is the reward. Now we want to take that next step and advance even further. Taylor is having a great season and will be a tough match-up, but we have a lot of talent as well and are playing well at the right time. It should be a great game."
